Morgan silver dollars... people spend thousands and thousands of dollars trying to put together a complete date/mintmark set, and for the average collector it's an impossible task. Heck, the 1893-S alone will set you back several grand even for a low-grade example!
What I have opted to do instead, is to work on a collection of colorful common-date examples. Morgans can be found in a wide range of colorful toning, from monochromatic to full rainbow toning, with different patterns (target, end-roll, textile). No two coins are ever exactly alike.
While full-on neon toned "monsters" in MS65 and up can cost outrageous sums, you can frequently find lovely examples without breaking the bank. The most expensive coin on this site cost $275; 85% of the coins cost less than $100; and 57% of the coins cost less than $50. For the cost of a trip to the movie theater, you can add an attractive or unusual coin to your collection. The next time you're at your local dealer's shop or at a coin show, take a brief glance through the common-date morgans for some color... they're out there.
These coins are not for sale.
